A side-scrolling platform game released by Nintendo in 1990 as one of the Super Famicom's launch titles. It introduced Yoshi, a dinosaur companion, and new moves such as the cape and the Spin Jump.

A 15-person team at Nintendo EAD began development in October 1988, shortly after the release of Super Mario Bros. 3; Koji Kondo spent around a year and a half on the soundtrack.
