A role-playing game released by Square for the PlayStation in 1997. It combined 3D polygon graphics with pre-rendered movies. It was directed by Yoshinori Kitase, with music by Nobuo Uematsu.

Initially planned for the SNES, it moved to PlayStation due to technical and economic limits; a team of 100–150 people developed it in just over a year at an estimated cost of $40 million.

Gameplay

Gameplay overview

Play moves between the world map, field and battle screens, using the Active Time Battle system and Materia orbs slotted into equipment to customize characters.
