Founded on July 5, 1950, by Naoharu Yamashina, Bandai grew from toy distribution into a major toy manufacturer. Its video game hardware included the Arcadia 2001 (1982), Playdia, the Apple Bandai Pippin (1996) and the WonderSwan handheld (1999). In September 2005 it merged with Namco to form Bandai Namco Holdings.
